When is Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day in 2024 is on Sunday 10th March. The date changes every year and this goes back to the religious significance of Mother’s Day or more rightly it should be called Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday are two different ideas/events that have been made indistinguishable from each other as the religious meaning declines.

Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day?

Mothering Sunday was a holiday in which you were supposed to visit your ‘Mother’ church along with your family. The date for Mothering Sunday differs from year to year. It is linked to Easter which is on a different date each year as it is determined by the lunar calendar. In the United Kingdom Mothering Sunday always falls on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent.

Mother’s Day was formed much later than Mothering Sunday and was a holiday in the USA. Mother’s Day was created in 1908 by Anna Jarvis who campaigned for a holiday to celebrate mothers. President Woodrow Wilson made it an official holiday in the USA in 1914. However, Jarvis became dismayed as the holiday became ever more commercial and she named it ‘Hallmark Holiday’.
